Hay Fever
What is Hay Fever?
Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen, leading to inflammation of the nasal passages and eyes. It occurs when the immune system overreacts to pollen particles, mistaking them for harmful invaders. While hay fever is often associated with the spring and summer months when pollen levels are high, it can also occur during other seasons due to different allergens.
Common Symptoms
The symptoms of hay fever can vary in severity but typically include:
- Sneezing: Frequent and repetitive sneezing due to nasal irritation.
- Runny or Stuffy Nose: An itchy, runny nose or congestion caused by inflammation of the nasal passages.
- Watery, Itchy Eyes: Red, swollen, and itchy eyes, often accompanied by excessive tearing.
- Itchy Throat and Ears: Irritation and itching in the throat and ears.
- Coughing and Postnasal Drip: Irritation in the back of the throat leading to a persistent cough or postnasal drip.
Triggers and Causes
Hay fever is triggered by allergens, with pollen being the most common culprit. Depending on the allergen, hay fever can be classified into two types:
- Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis: Typically caused by tree pollen in the spring, grass pollen in the summer, and weed pollen in the fall.
- Perennial Allergic Rhinitis: This form of hay fever can occur throughout the year and is often triggered by indoor allergens like dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, and cockroach debris.
Management and Treatment
While hay fever cannot be completely cured, several management strategies can help alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life:
- Avoidance: Try to limit exposure to allergens by staying indoors during peak pollen times, keeping windows closed, and using air purifiers in the home.
- Medications: Over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal corticosteroids can provide relief from hay fever symptoms. However, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional before starting any medication.
- Allergy Shots (Immunotherapy): For individuals with severe hay fever, allergy shots may be recommended. These shots gradually desensitise the immune system to allergens, reducing the severity of the allergic response over time.
- Nasal Rinses: Saline nasal rinses can help clear the nasal passages and reduce inflammation.
When to Seek Medical Advice
If hay fever symptoms persist or worsen despite self-management efforts, it is advisable to seek medical advice from our experienced healthcare professionals. Additionally, if hay fever symptoms interfere with daily activities, cause significant discomfort, or if there are concerns about medication side effects, a doctor’s evaluation is recommended.
